This page is to describe the data standard for what is collected and stored in CleanWaterWiki.org. The information collected from organizations vary greatly, and though work is underway [1] there is currently no prevailing standard.

The data model below is loosely based on the FEMA incident reporting system NFIRS. Each WaterPoint requires basic information, but when recording additional data for a particular type of event or inspection, additional predefined attributes are available.

WaterPoint

A WaterPoint is location where water is (or was) available. All Water Points have at minimum the following details, and there are extended optional documents for attributes to allow a more extensible standard. There is a single WaterPoint entry, for any given WaterPoint. The extended information documents below are a time series; storing historical information over time.

  • lat
  • lng
  • functioning - integer value of 1 or 0 (true, or false, respectively), to represent whether or not the Water Point is currently operational
  • (true or false)
  • functioning_at - A timestamp (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM GMT time) of when it was reported as operational
  • source_type - The general source type, source details are located in the corresponding WaterSource
  • quality_rating - a value from 0 to 10, summarizing the qualities of the water for consumption (0 being unusable/contaminated, 10 being high quality potable drinking water). Water quality is much more complicated than a single integer, and the WaterQuality extended document below is intended to cover more of this. The integer rating is used for casual data review of large volumes of water points.
  • country:string - 2 character ISO code
  • village:string
  • district:string
  • updated_at - A timestamp of when this record was last updated
  • created_at - A timestamp of when this record was first entered into the system

WaterSource

  • water_point_id - the integer referencing the water point that this report
  • date - when was this record created (there are multiple WaterSource records per WaterPoint, though it generally does not change)
  • source_type - Surface, River, Lake, Human Bored, Machine Bored, Well, Rainwater Harvest, Dam, Spring, Protected Spring (TODO)
  • extraction_system - Type: None, Hand Pump, Windmill, Gravity, Other
  • system_functioning - Boolean (1 - true, 0 - false)
  • system_functioning_notes - Text description, broken elements

WaterCost

  • water_point_id - the integer referencing the water point that this report
  • date - when was this record created (each record is as reported at a given point in time)
  • cost - Text, (10 USD / Jerry)
  • payment_structure - volume, time, other

WaterQuality

  • water_point_id - the integer referencing the water point that this report
  • date - when was this record created (there are multiple WaterQuality records per WaterPoint, over time)
  • quantity - Dry, Seasonal, Insufficient, Enough
  • negative_attributes - Soft,Milky,Coloured,Salty,Salty abandoned,Fluoride,Fluoride Abandoned,Other
  • safe_human - Boolean (1 - true, 0 - false)
  • safe_livestock - Boolean (1 - true, 0 - false)
  • safe_irrigation - Boolean (1 - true, 0 - false)

WaterAttribute

  • water_point_id - the integer referencing the water point that this report
  • data - set of attributes - non search, additional data points
    • Common attributes: year_installed, elevation, installer, scheme_ownership, wp_management (trust, water board, etc)
  • created_at
